The Texas House took historic steps today as it passed out one of the strongest pro-2nd amendment bills since the ratification of the Constitution. The House also took steps to ensure no government official could prohibit the purchase of a gun or ammo in Texas.
House Bill 1927 by state Representative Matt Schaefer, emphasizes the constitutional right administered under the Second Amendment which protects an individual's right to keep and bear arms. It also ensures the right of law-abiding citizens to be able to carry a handgun in public places for both personal and protection reasons.
Despite all the false claims by the opposition, House Bill 1927 DOES NOT ALLOW anyone and everyone to carry a handgun. All current handgun and public safety laws are still active under HB 1927. Here’s how the bill works:
An individual who is previously prohibited from possessing firearms under state and federal law WILL NOT be given the right to possess one under this legislation.
Additionally, the unlicensed carry of a handgun in sensitive places will still be prohibited.
If you are a licensed individual above the age of 21, you have the right to carry a handgun in a holster in nonprohibited public places.
Places where weapons were previously prohibited, such as schools or college campuses, will not be changed under this legislation.
Lawful citizens will still go through the same process to purchase a weapon under current law.
HB 1927 assures that licensed public or private employers and employees will not be prohibited from carrying a handgun on the premises of their business. However, business owners and private property owners will still be given the right to prohibit handguns on their property.
In addition to securing the right of lawful citizens to carry, the House also took steps to ensure the right of lawful citizens to be able to purchase a handgun or ammo.
Rep. Cole Hefner’s HB 1500 states that the directive under the legislation cannot authorize the seizure or confiscation of any firearm or ammunition from a lawfully carrying or possessing individual. Additionally, the directive issued cannot prohibit or restrict the business operation of firearms or ammunition manufacturer, distributor, wholesaler, supplier, or retailer.
HB 1927, supported by text under HB 1500, secures law-abiding Texan’s the right to lawfully carry, while emphasizing that Texas will still have stringent laws against the misuse of firearms.
